Outreach

Postdoctoral Research Scientist Dr. Tom Brussel led a virtual course for 12 middle school students with 365 SMART Academy of the University of Alaska-Fairbanks in August 2021 titled “Alaska on Fire”. The course’s content was geared to share knowledge of boreal forest succession and how these ecosystems interact and are impacted by climate change and wildfire. Participants were guided through these topics through interactive lessons and discussions, which were then reinforced in activities outside of the meeting time. Click here to learn more.

We hope to broaden the impact of our research in Russia and the U.S.

Drs. Shvidenko and Schepaschenko will organize a special group (mostly of Russian participants) within the Young Scientist Summer Program at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis to study LANDIS-II modeling and help analyze the results obtained from our project. They will also organize a special seminar for PhD students and young scientists of the Siberian Federal University and Institute of Forest Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (both in Krasnoyarsk) in 2019. This will provide a direct link to the next generation of forest researchers and managers in Russia. Finally, the results will be transmitted by the research team to Russian federal and regional forest authorities to guide development of climate adaptation and mitigation programs for Russian taiga forests, including strategies of reforestation, fire and pest protection, assisted migration, etc.
