Congrats to Gabriel who got accepted to the Innovation Summit led by ESIIL, a NSF-funded data synthesis center in Boulder, CO. https://esiil.org
New USDA Forest Service grant
Melissa received a new $50K grant to compare different estimates of wildfire risk in Oregon.
We’re excited to work with Andy Gray, Team Lead and Research Ecologist, in Corvallis, OR, and others on this project, especially given the importance of studying wildfire risk here in OR.
New book chapter by Melissa
New book on boreal forests in the face of climate change out today, published by Springer Publishing. Check out the chapter on modeling disturbances co-authored by Rupert, Marie, Juha and Melissa.
Congratulations to Neil Williams!
As of Jan 15, 2023, Neil has left the TEEL Lab to work with Justin Crotteau as an ORISE Postdoctoral Fellow at the U.S. Forest Service office in Missoula, Montana. One step closer to his dream job of a Research Forester in the U.S. Forest Service!
Congratulations to Shelby Weiss
Congratulations to Dr. Shelby Weiss!
CONGRATS!
Congratulations on an excellent defense, Shelby, at the University of Oregon, which, of course, inspired Spock to “throw an O”.
Upcoming disseration defense by Shelby Weiss
Excited to announce that Shelby Weiss, first PhD student in our lab, will be defending her dissertation this Friday.

Here, we outline barriers and opportunities in the next generation of fire science and provide guidance for investment in future research. We synthesize insights needed to better address the long-standing challenges of innovation across disciplines to (i) promote coordinated research efforts; (ii) embrace different ways of knowing and knowledge generation; (iii) promote exploration of fundamental science; (iv) capitalize on the “firehose” of data for societal benefit; and (v) integrate human and natural systems into models across multiple scales.
Congrats to Alison Deak!
Alison successfully defended her M.S. last week and then started her dream job in CA (see previous post). We’ll miss her!
First two videos from our AK Reburns project have been released!
The first two videos from our AK Reburns project have been released. They are paired with middle/high school curriculum and will be distributed (when the final two videos are completed) free to teachers. Grab your popcorn and watch these two videos, only four min each:
